Now that you have finalised your End of Financial Year for 2020, the new financial year begins.
The Fair Work Commission has just announced a 1.75% increase to minimum wages for all Award wages under the national workplace relations system, for the coming 2021 financial year.
The new minimum wage will be $753.80 per week or $19.84 per hour. It will apply from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2020 for all employees not covered by an Award or agreement under the national workplace relations system.
In Western Australia, companies and incorporated trusts and partnerships are covered by the national workplace relations system. However, sole-traders and unincorporated trusts and partnerships are covered by the WA state system, which is different to the other states of Australia. The WA Industrial Relations Commission is due to hand down its decision on changes to the State’s minimum wages – which affects about 300,000 employees – by the end of the month.

Effect of the Minimum Wage Increase on COVID 19 Relief Programs
- JobKeeper Payment
If an employee is being paid under the JobKeeper Payment scheme, the minimum wage increase will affect the JobKeeper Payment top-up amount per payroll cycle. - Payroll Tax
The increase will affect the Payroll Tax reporting for your business depending on which state of Australia you’re operating in, as each state has its own payroll tax laws. AustAsia Group can review the effect of the new Minimum Wage on your business’ Payroll Tax reporting as well as any relief or updates to the relevant state payroll tax.For example, the NSW payroll tax threshold will increase from $900,000 to $1 million on 1 July 2020 and in WA it will increase from $950,000 to $1 million on 1 January 2021.
